移民局部长信中指出：

澳洲将重铸难民与人道主义援助计划，新财年的预算对于主权领土保卫计划又起到了进一步的巩固。特殊人道主义援助计划(SpecialHumanitarian Programme)在去年Howard政府管理下从4700跌落到了仅援助了500人，然而非法移民则从2012-13年的200人增加到了5000人。
移民和边境保卫部部长PeterDutton表示主权保卫计划确保了减少非法移民的数量，从而进一步确保了人道主义计划的顺利实施。政府将在下一个财年进一步接纳13750个名额，在2017-2018年增加到16250个，在2017-2018年最终增长到18750。 墨尔本留学移民

这将意味着澳洲将继续位列全球国家中接纳难民总量前三名。2018-2019年的总量将是近三十年来最高的。
